Intensive Outpatient Program, in the context of addiction, is a non-live-in addiction treatment program for individuals who need lesser therapeutical services, either because they have a minor addiction problem or have graduated from a residential rehab program and temporarily need extra support. Still, an Intensive Outpatient Program requires a major time commitment of at least 3 days a week for 2-4 hours a day or more. The major focus of this program is relapse prevention, and treatment sessions are often scheduled around clients' needs. It's important to recognize that outpatient care may not be suitable for individuals who have a chronic history of drug abuse and who need a higher level of supervision. A qualified medical professional will need to make such assessment.
