Lortab contains a combination of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid (narcotic pain medication/analgesics) synthesized from codeine, one of the opioid alkaloids found in the opium poppy.
When Lortab is taken for extended periods of time, users can develop tolerance, dependence and are at risk for developing addiction. Individuals who are physically dependent upon Lortab often experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms when they are without the drug. The withdrawal symptoms experienced often drive the individual to continue seeking out the drug. When Lortab is combined with other drugs, the risk of accidental overdose significantly increases. Most opioid deaths are the result of respiratory depression.
