5 things to know about rehabs

Should I Travel for Rehab?

There is more to finding a drug and alcohol rehab treatment center than finding one close to home. Other factors such as insurance coverage, the need of specialized treatment for related mental health disorders, special accommodations for pre-existing medical conditions, personal lifestyle, and environmental influences are some of the more important elements needed to be taken into consideration when seeking addiction treatment.

On the other hand, choosing a rehab center that is away from home is the recommended option for many as the best solution. So, the answer to the question: "Should I travel for rehab?" is: "Why not?" There are many benefits to getting addiction treatment away from home; below are a few of them:

  • Geographical distance creates a natural boundary between the individual and other environmental factors that have contributed to the drug or alcohol addiction.
  • Traveling reinforces the idea that the individual is starting over. Addiction treatment away from home gives individuals a fresh outlook on life as they learn about addiction, about themselves, and about the kind of future they want to have after they complete their drug and alcohol rehab program.
  • Bad habits are easier to break when one is far from temptations, which may include influential social circles, environmental triggers (e.g., walking past a bar that triggers old memories) and stressful stimuli (e.g., stressors at work or at home). When individuals attending addiction treatment are away from their usual environmental and the stimuli that trigger substance use, it could be easier for them to stick to the recovery program as they set new emotional and mental boundaries.
  • Temptation to drop out of treatment is lessened.

Whether choosing addiction treatment close or away from home, recovering from substance use is a challenging process, and different for everyone. If you are reading this article, chances are you or a loved one is struggling with a substance use disorder and we hope we can be of help.
