REHAB CENTERS - What Do I Need to Know When Choosing One?

There are times during one's life that a decision made based on a quick online search results in a very bad choice. Looking for a rehab center could easily pass for one of those decisions if it is solely made by the ranking of a rehab on a search page. So, what should you be asking or looking for before choosing and committing yourself or your loved one into an addiction treatment facility. Obviously, there should be a certain additional criteria to be considered besides how a rehab center shows on an online search page.

So the question is what should be the process prior to committing to an addiction treatment facility. The quick answer is to be a knowledgeable consumer as you would be in obtaining any other services or products.

Time is of an essence when seeking treatment and the treatment cost is usually an obstacle, but taking a little time to get informed will help you save time and money.

We hope the information below will serve as suggestions for questions to ask that will lead to making informed decision in choosing a reputable rehab center.

1. Length of Time the Rehab Center Has Been in Business

This is important. You want to make sure that the addiction treatment facility has been around long enough; that there is experience behind the staff's expertise in providing effective addiction treatment.

2. Length of Time the Rehab Center Operates Has Been in the Same Physical Location

Rehab centers are businesses, and as a business they have to abide by the rules of business as well. Some rehab centers will cover their inadequacies and problems by changing their names and locations.

3. Rehab Centers Certifications, Accreditations and Memberships

There are organizations that provide accreditations to reputable rehab centers which require the accrediting institution to examine the facility and its program in order to make the facility eligible for a certification. One such organization is The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission is an independent, non-profit organization which accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Therefore, certification and accreditation by the Joint Commission shows that the rehab center provides quality services that reflects the Joint Commission's commitment which is "to meet the standard for delivery of safe and effective care of the highest quality and value for their clients".

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is another organization that provides membership inclusion to addiction treatment facilities. SAMHSA is an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. Being included in SAMHSA treatment listing is another way to find out how credible is the rehab center.

4. Rehab Center Licenses

In Florida, licenses for rehab centers are provided by the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Knowing the licensing expertise level that has been endowed to the rehab center can help individuals looking for an addiction treatment facility spot the treatment that is "right" for them. It is very important to know what and for which age group the facility is actually licensed for. For instance, if an adult individual has already been through detox and/or a residential therapeutic service, he or she will most likely be looking for a place providing a continuum of treatment, and that service is available at rehab centers licensed for providing Intensive Outpatient Treatment for adults.

Below is a list of the most relevant levels of licensing for substance abuse services:

  • Inpatient Detoxification
  • It is good to know if the facility itself is licensed for medical detoxification or they send clients to another facility for detox. Although not a requirement it is better to receive medical detoxification and therapeutic counseling services from the same professional medical entity.

  • Residential Level I
  • These licensed services provide structured, live-in, non-hospital settings with 24-hour supervision, seven days per week. There is a nurse on duty in these facilities at all times.

  • Residential Level II
  • These are licensed, structured rehabilitation-oriented group facilities that have 24-hour a day, seven days per week supervision. Level II facilities house persons who have significant deficits in independent living skills and need extensive support and supervision.

  • Day or Night Treatment
  • Treatment provided on a nonresidential basis at least three hours per day and at least 12 hours each week and is intended for clients who meet the placement criteria for this component.

  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment
  • Treatment provided on a nonresidential basis and is intended for clients who meet the placement criteria for this component. This component provides structured services each day that may include ancillary psychiatric and medical services.

  • Outpatient Treatment
  • Treatment provided on a nonresidential basis and is intended for clients who meet the placement criteria for this component.

5. Treatment Therapies Provided in the Rehab Program

Rehab centers providing comprehensive addiction treatment programs are often capable of offering effective therapeutic treatments. Much has been the discussions about therapies that should be offered and its effectiveness. In a large consensus, treatment programs that include treatments backed by scientific evidence and therapies to treat the body, mind and spirit, are often the ones who are able to promote positive changes in the lives of their clients. These rehab programs are known as "comprehensive addiction treatment", and they often offer the following therapeutic and counseling services:

  • Specialized Therapies to treat common co-occurring disorders such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, bi-polar disorder, etc.
  • Individual Psychotherapy
  • Group Therapy offered in small groups.
  • Gender Specific Counseling
  • Family Therapy to enhance the quality of the clients' relationship with family and loved ones.
  • Relapse Prevention and specialized program for chronic relapsers.
  • Life Skills Training
  • Spiritual Counseling
  • Alternative Therapies such as Meditation, Biofeedback and Music Therapies as well as Exercising, are all good therapeutic approaches which are usually incorporated in a well-rounded rehab program. They are often utilized to  relieve stress and ease discomfort, helping recovering individuals way beyond the treatment process, as they often adopt and keep practicing these valuable holistic therapies to promote continuum wellness.
  • Discharge Planning & Aftercare Programming offers the recovering individual a high chance of maintaining sobriety by providing a continuum of care. These programs can include 12-Step programs, support groups, sober living arrangements and individual or group counseling. A good discharge planning addresses not only a lifestyle change with supported guidance, but it also addresses housing issues, employment plans and/or educational needs.

We, at Florida Center for Recovery (FCR), hope that the information we have provided here will help you in choosing a treatment program that will bring lasting recovery. We are sure you understand that even the best treatment in the world will most likely not work if treatment is imposed and not sought. Individuals seeking addiction treatment must be ready and willing to work the program no matter where they receive treatment. The reality is that detox and therapeutic counseling does not offer any guarantee for life long sobriety. Relapse can happen and for that matter relapse prevention is part of the recovery process.

In an extra effort to help you or your loved one in your journey to recovery, we have gathered below a list with the answers provided by families who took part in our Intensive Family Therapy sessions. The question asked was: "What factors do you believe made the greatest impact on the recovery of your loved one?"

Below are the answers that were the most given by the families.

  • My loved one willingness to get better.

  • My loved one received effective trauma therapy.

  • The bond of trust and chemistry between client and therapist, counselors, and medical professionals at the rehab facility.

  • My loved one's ability to realize meaning in life and go after it, as well as the therapist's ability to convey the message of "possibility and hope" for new meaning to life.
