What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children. ADHD also affects many adults. Symptoms of ADHD include inattention (not being able to keep focus), hyperactivity (excess movement that is not fitting to the setting) and impulsivity (hasty acts that occur at the moment without thought). ADHD is a treatable disorder that can be managed with medication and therapy. Unfortunately, many undiagnosed individuals often self-medicate with addictive substances such as alcohol, marijuana, heroin, prescription tranquilizers, pain medication, cocaine and street amphetamines in attempts to calm their overactive brains and bodies.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and addiction are common co-occurring conditions often sharing similar signs and symptoms. Since these conditions have such an extensive overlap, treatment for these two disorders usually involves a dual diagnosis program.

Several studies have shown a strong connection between ADHD, drug abuse, and alcoholism.  ADHD is five to 10 times more common among adult alcoholics than it is in people without the condition. Among adults being treated for alcohol and substance abuse, the rate of ADHD is about 25%.
