Opiates are drugs derived from the poppy plant and include a variety of drugs ranging from legal drugs such as Morphine, Codeine and Fentanyl to illegal drugs such as Heroin. Opiates have powerful euphoric effects, powerful withdrawal symptoms and powerful cravings.

There are Three Classifications of Opiates:

  • Naturally occurring opium derivative like Morphine.
  • Partially Synthetic derivatives of Morphine like Heroin, OxyContin, Hydrocodone, Oxymorphone.
  • Synthetic Compounds like Fentanyl, Alfentanil, Levorphanol, Meperidine, Methadone, Codeine, and Propoxyphene.

Opiate Dependence

Although prescription opiates are commonly prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain, because of the intense high produced by the interaction of opiates and the brain, these drugs are extremely addictive, sometimes causing powerful cravings and withdrawal symptoms within days.

If you cannot get off opiates, suffer withdrawal symptoms upon cessation of using, and compulsively use them despite harm to your health and life, you are dependent on opiates and may need help to stop.
